Trailing plants, cascading plants or plants for hanging baskets, however you refer to them, these tropical plants are great in a container where they are given room to let their hair down. There is a satisfying appeal to the flowing nature of their stems and the vertical lines created when they flow over the edges of a pot. I have categorized them as trailing plants because they have many uses in that regard. High on window sill, the can flow down a wall. Of course, in hanging baskets they can be suspended in air. But consider a porch railing, a short architectural column or may be a just a giant planter. Some plants even moonlight as groundcovers.

The spillover nature of these plants can break the sharp lines or clinical curves in an overly urban setting. Free flowering varieties can add the splash of color need in an otherwise drab backdrop or porch. Judicious selection of containers can only add to the effect you are looking to achieve.

One idea when planning your hanging basket planting, is to use more than one kind of plant. Choose plants that have a similar habit but contrasting flowers or foliage. For a sense of the dramatic you may place a taller, stout specimen in the middle of the pot and a rambling, low-growing plant around it that will flow over the edges of the container. Whatever direction you take, Zone 9 Tropicals offers a varied selection of top-quality trailing plants for you hanging baskets.

In this section we have gathered a selection of my favorite tropical plants suitable for use in hanging baskets and other trailing applications.
