Costus pictus is fairly easy to grow. It requires well draining and uniformly moist soil and, ideally, temperatures above 70F to grow successfully. In the ground, it will easily survive winters typical USDA zone 9 winters. Our winter will knock the plant back to the ground, but it will come right back in the spring. It will be fine in full sun for part of the day but some shade is preferable. The more sun it gets the more water this plant requires.
In pot culture it requires warmth for active growth as well as plenty of water. Like most plants it does not like to stay in wet soil with standing water.
